Common heating problems we fix
Around here a heater sits unused most of the year. That's why problems tend to show up on the first cold night. This is what it usually looks like, and where we start.
No heat
The system won't start, or it starts and only blows cool air. We go step by step: thermostat, power, safeties, then the furnace or heat pump itself, until we know why.
Short cycling
The heat comes on and shuts right back off, again and again. Sometimes that's airflow. Sometimes it's a safety switch doing exactly what it's supposed to, or a controls problem. We find out which one.
Burning or dusty smell the first time on
Faint and dusty, and it fades? That's dust baking off, most likely. Sharp, electrical or like melting plastic is another thing. Shut it off and call us.
Blower runs, but no warm air
The fan's going but the air's lukewarm at best. On a gas furnace we look at ignition and the burners. On a heat pump or electric heat we look at the heat strips and controls.
Heat pump iced up or stuck on aux heat
A little frost that goes away by itself is fine. If the outdoor unit stays iced over, or the thermostat says aux or emergency heat all day long, have someone look at it.
Pilot and ignition problems
The furnace clicks but never lights, or it lights and then drops out, or the pilot won't stay lit. We check the igniter and the flame sensor, along with the gas supply and safety controls.
Thermostat issues
Wrong mode, dead batteries, a smart schedule stuck on away, or wiring that isn't talking to the system. Sometimes the fix really is that simple, and if it is, we'll tell you.
Heat already out? Start with what to do if your heat goes out in a cold snap. Wondering about that first-heat smell? Read why your heater smells the first time you turn it on.
Smell gas?
Rotten eggs or sulfur? Get everybody outside first. Then call the gas utility, and after that, call us.
How we work
A tech watches your heater run before anybody recommends anything. Then we tell you what broke and why, in regular words, and what fixing it involves. You make the call. If a repair on older equipment isn't worth the money, we'll say so.
We're open 24 hours Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. Our Class A license is TACLA153648C.

Fall heating check
You'd much rather find a heating problem on a nice afternoon than on the first freezing night. So before the first front shows up, swap the filter, set the thermostat to HEAT, and see if warm air comes out. Our fall AC-to-heat checklist has the details.
If you'd rather have us check it on a schedule, that's what Velocity Care is for. It's preventative maintenance with member pricing on the benefits your plan lists.
- A spring cooling tune-up and a fall heating tune-up
- A photo checklist at every tune-up
- Nameplates, filter size and first-visit baselines on record
- Repair and equipment discounts on the plan you choose
Heating repair FAQ
Do you repair gas furnaces and heat pumps?
Yes, and electric heat too, in homes around Tomball, Spring and the rest of Greater Houston. First we figure out what's wrong. You hear the options before we start on anything.
Is a burning smell normal the first time the heat runs?
Usually, yes. A faint dusty smell that's gone in an hour or two is dust burning off parts that sat all summer. If it's sharp, electrical or smells like melting plastic, that's not dust. Shut the system off and call us.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Get out of the house first. Then call the gas utility, and after that, call us.
My heat pump is covered in ice. Is that a problem?
Light frost that clears up by itself is part of how a heat pump works. If the outdoor unit stays iced solid, it needs a technician. Don't chip at it or spray it with a hose.
When should I get a fall heating check?
Before the first cold front, while it's still mild out. Velocity Care members get a fall heating tune-up along with a spring cooling one, or you can call us and set up a single visit.
How much does it cost to diagnose a furnace or heat pump that isn't heating?
Velocity Air's residential diagnostic is $89. We waive it 100% when we make the repair or you buy a system from us.
Can I get heating repair on a Saturday or in the middle of the night?
Yes. We're open 24 hours Monday through Saturday, so a no-heat call on a Saturday night or at 2 a.m. on a weekday is fine. Call (832) 589-0813.
My heat went out on a Sunday. Can you come?
We're closed Sunday. You can send a request online any day, and we'll call you back once we open, since we're open 24 hours Monday through Saturday.
Should I repair or replace an old furnace or heat pump?
If one part failed and the rest is sound, a repair usually makes sense. When the equipment is older and the repairs keep adding up, we'll tell you if a repair isn't worth the money. Then you decide.
Is there financing for a new furnace or heat pump?
Yes. Velocity Air offers 0% financing over 5 years, subject to credit approval.
Do you do heating repair outside Tomball and Spring?
