Common AC problems we fix
Around Houston an air conditioner runs most of the year, and parts wear out. Below is what a failing AC tends to look like, what you can safely check on your own, and where we start.
AC running but blowing warm air
Air's coming out, it's just not cold. The usual culprits: a filter or coil so dirty the air can't get through, an outdoor unit that's stopped (failed capacitors and contactors do that a lot), or a leak that's left the refrigerant low. Set the thermostat to COOL, fan on AUTO, and pull the filter to have a look. Outdoor fan not spinning? Turn the system off and call us. We'll look for the leak before adding refrigerant, because topping it off without finding the leak only buys you time.
AC won't turn on
Maybe the thermostat is blank, or the indoor unit runs while the outdoor unit just sits there. Could be as simple as dead thermostat batteries or the wrong mode, so look there first. Past that, we're talking about a tripped breaker, the disconnect box outside, a float switch that killed power because the drain backed up, or a capacitor or control board that quit. Tripped breaker? Read the breaker note below before you flip it back.
Frozen coil or ice on the refrigerant line
Ice on the indoor coil, or on the copper line outside, is almost always one of two things. Either air isn't moving like it should (dirty filter, weak blower, vents shut) or the refrigerant is low. Switch the cooling off and let the fan run by itself until it thaws. If the filter's dirty, change it. Please don't chip at the ice. If it freezes up again, call us.
Water leaking around the indoor unit
Most leaks trace back to a clogged condensate drain or a cracked drain pan. A float switch that's missing or failed will do it too, and so will a frozen coil as it melts. If water is pooling or getting into a ceiling or floor, shut the system off and call us. More in how to prevent a clogged AC drain.
Short cycling
The system kicks on and shuts off every few minutes. It might be too big for the house. It might be short on airflow or refrigerant, or the thermostat could be in a bad spot, or some electrical parts are on their way out. We figure out which before we replace anything.
Noisy outdoor unit
Buzzing or humming? Usually a capacitor, contactor or motor having a hard time starting. Grinding and squealing tend to be fan motor bearings that have worn out. A rattle is often just a loose panel, or something fell in there. Grinding or smoke means shut it off and call us.
Breaker keeps tripping
Reset it once. Just once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us. Breakers trip for a reason, like a shorted part, a motor on its way out or a compressor pulling too much current, and flipping it back on again and again can make that damage worse.
How we work
A technician looks at your system while it's running, the way it runs on a hot afternoon, before recommending anything. Then we tell you what failed and why. You see the options, and you decide what gets done.
We're open 24 hours Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday. Our Class A license number is TACLA153648C.

Repair or replace? How we help you decide
Usually an AC problem comes down to one part, and fixing it is the obvious call. Not always, though. When it's close, these are the things we go over with you.
- The age and condition of the system
- Whether the failure is a small part (a capacitor, contactor or drain) or a major one (the compressor or a coil)
- A refrigerant leak that keeps coming back
- How many repairs the system has needed lately
- Comfort problems a repair won’t fix, like rooms that never cool down
If we think a repair on older equipment is money you won't get back, we'll tell you. When replacing makes more sense, here's how we plan a system replacement.
Recent AC repairs
A few recent repair calls, by month and town.
September 2026 · a Conroe home
The coil was leaking refrigerant. We repaired the leak and recharged the system.
September 2026 · a Spring home
The AC drain had clogged, so we cleared the condensate line.
August 2026 · a Spring home
An after-hours call with no cooling. It got a new capacitor and contactor, some refrigerant and a new thermostat.
July 2026 · a Tomball home
No cooling. After diagnosing it, we replaced the capacitor.
December 2025 · a Klein-area dental office
Water was dripping from the AC. We upgraded the drain line and added a float switch, then replaced the expansion valve, flushed the refrigerant lines and recharged the system.
September 2025 · a home in The Woodlands
This was a big one. We replaced the compressor and the outdoor fan motor, and put in a new indoor coil with a new expansion valve.
Keeping it from happening again
A spring visit is when we catch the weak capacitor, the dirty coil or the slow drain, before summer starts leaning on the system.
Velocity Care is built around that. It's maintenance on a schedule, with a cooling tune-up every spring and a heating tune-up every fall.
Where we do AC repair
We repair AC for homes in Tomball, Spring, The Woodlands, Cypress, Conroe, Magnolia, Porter, New Caney, Humble and Kingwood.
If it's just one room that won't cool, we'll often find a crushed or pulled-loose duct in the attic, not a bad AC. That's air duct repair. Got small round outlets in the ceiling? Then you've likely got a small-duct system, and here's how we handle high-velocity system service.

AC repair FAQ
Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?
There are a few usual suspects. A dirty filter or coil can choke off the airflow, or the outdoor unit isn't running (bad capacitors and contactors are common), or a leak has the refrigerant low. Sometimes it's only the thermostat setting. Look at the filter and make sure it says COOL. If the outdoor fan isn't spinning, turn everything off and call us.
Should I repair or replace my AC?
If one part failed and everything else is in decent shape, fix it. Replacement starts to make sense on an older system that loses its compressor or coil, has a leak that keeps coming back, or just keeps racking up repair bills. We'll lay out both and let you decide.
Why is my AC frozen?
It's almost always airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the cooling off and run the fan so it thaws, and put in a new filter if yours is dirty. If it ices up again, give us a call. Running it frozen is hard on the compressor.
Is it safe to keep running my AC if water is leaking?
If water's pooling, or it's soaking into a ceiling or floor, shut the system off. Usually it's a clogged condensate drain or a float switch that failed. Once we know which, it's normally a simple fix.
When can I call for AC repair?
We're open 24 hours a day Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Give us a call or put in a request online.
